We are Catching Fish Like We’d Anticipate with the Arrival of Fall

A Day's Catch Caught With Pepperfish Key Charters

October 15, 2014

Greetings from Steinhatchee, I have not sent in a report in a while, apologies, sorriness is my only excuse. Our scallop season went very well, which is a miracle, considering the poor visibility we had as late as the last few weeks of June. But then in September we had a fish kill offshore, red tide presumably. It hung around for a few weeks, haunting the coastal communities here along the Big Bend/Nature Coast part of Florida. And it’s still hanging around out in the Gulf. The latest forcast is for it to drift further away. FWC has a page […]

We’ve Had A Great Year And The Last Few Weeks Have Been Fun

A Day's Catch Caught With Pepperfish Key Charters

January 2, 2014

Congratulations, we have made through another year. I just realized it’s been several weeks since I posted an article. Apologies. We have had a great year, very blessed year and looking forward to 2014. The last few weeks here in Steinhatchee have been a lot of fun, with Family, Friends, Fish and Food. We are catching Speckled Trout in the river regularly. Some days we have to hunt a little, but hey! can’t be easy every day. The creeks are also holding fish, usually bigger. With the numbers of Trout in the river, it’s easy to talk yourself out of […]

The Fish Are Here And It’s Productive

Three Keeper Steinhatchee Redfish

November 6, 2013

I mentioned last report fall being late, or summer hanging on long. Well which ever case fall is here. The Speckled Trout have moved up closer to the hill and the Redfish have bunched up. For those of you who are familiar with our vast beautiful grass flats, you know what an exciting fishing season this is, and how productive the “rock grass” can be. And I might mention, the challenge that fishing it can be. It is no place for weak knots or old line or any other kind of equipment issues. Large Trout and upper slot Reds will […]

Fall Is Finally Here

Cool Weather Steinhatchee Speckled Trout

October 17, 2013

It seems a little late to me, but I think fall is finally here. Morning  air temps in the 60’s all week are one sign.  Speckled Trout and Redfish in the rock grass is another. Sand Trout and Spanish Mackerel on the flats around sandbars  is another. The water is clearing albeit slowly. You can now see spotty  bottom. The south of Steinhatchee is slower to clear but the winds from the north and east will help it clean up. We are having great Trout fishing now and anticipate it getting better. Redfish have showed for me the last couple days on the flats […]

It’s Still Summertime But There Are Hints Of Change

Homosassa, Florida where they have clear water and plenty of Scallops

September 13, 2013

It’s still summertime here in Steinhatchee, but there are hints of change, a couple of mornings below 70 degrees will have you hunting a jacket for the boatride. Speckled Trout bite will pickup on the deeper flats. Shallow Trout should also bite more often with water temps dropping. We are also looking forward to our flats clearing up, or at least cleaning up. It is showing signs. Now we have a lot of conversation about the impact of dirty water on fish. I am mostly convinced it has more impact on fisherman than fish. Just like any other change in […]
