Captain Steve’s Steinhatchee Fishing Report

April 13, 2013

Hi Steinhatchee Friends, what great fishing we’re having and I expect to have for a while. Speckled Trout are feeding good right now and my guess is they are engaged in mating rituals, or getting ready to. Tuesday 4 of 5 trout were males, they were drumming. I’m sure they have to eat more during this time. Now we could have a lot of fun with conversation, but lets not and say we did, HaHa. The large females have bit well also, I’m sure the same applies. Trout seem to be everywhere, shallow and deep flats where grass is present. However, […]

Steinhatchee Fishing & Scalloping Report, It’s All About The Scallops Now

July 19, 2012

It is all about the Scallop right now. My last two inshore fishing trips have been sorry. I started to make something up, but I’m not a very good liar. Besides I’ve been Scalloping mostly. It’s been great, I’ve been nine times this July and we’ve gotten our limit eight out of the nine. The Pepperfish Key area is the place with the cleanest water and Scallops right now. By far, the best visibility is up toward Keaton Beach, I have not been able to find Scallops there however. We are hoping that area will magically clear up. We know the […]

Hey Steinhatchee Fans

April 23, 2012

The last few weeks have been fantastic on the flats off Dixie and Taylor counties. Limits of Speckled Trout and Redfish are common, and considering the Red limit doubling to two fish per person with a boat max of eight fish, I have wondered if I would need a bigger fish box on the boat. We have managed fine with the 80 quart engel fish box. Of course we still have a day when things are tough or it seems like the only Trout biting are 14 31/32″ or less. On the flip side I have had a couple days […]

Right Now, Steinhatchee Is For Catching Fish And Scalloping

July 11, 2011

Hey Gulf Lovers, My fishing report is brief this week. The way the tide was and the customers I had, I fished only two mornings. We caught Trout, both Speckled and Sand, a few Sea Bass, Flounder, Bluefish and Jack Crevalle. All great fun, but the story this week has been about the Scallop. Right now they are close to the river in both directions. This has allowed the crowds to spread out a little.  There are also several reports of good scallops deep. By deep I mean 6-10 feet. It takes the strongest of snorkeler to pick up scallops […]

Speckled Trout Are Moving and The Red Fish Are In The Usual Places

May 28, 2011

It is only the 27th of May, but summer is here. Most days the wind has kept the heat tolerable, along with a good bite. Speckled Trout have set up house on the deeper flats, 6-12feet deep. The shallow flats will still produce Trout in the morning till about 9 or 10 am and then they seem to quit, at which time we usually will move to the deeper flats or hunt Redfish. Redfish seem to have a higher tolerance to the heat and bright sun. Fish for them in the usual places all summer, rocky and hard bottom areas, […]
