Greetings from Steinhatchee, I have not sent in a report in a while, apologies, sorriness is my only excuse. Our scallop season went very well, which is a miracle, considering the poor visibility we had as late as the last few weeks of June.
But then in September we had a fish kill offshore, red tide presumably. It hung around for a few weeks, haunting the coastal communities here along the Big Bend/Nature Coast part of Florida. And it’s still hanging around out in the Gulf. The latest forcast is for it to drift further away. FWC has a page that is easy to find, if you’re interested in monitoring it. We praying and hoping it stays away, and the natural occurring algae’s impact very small.
We are catching fish! The kind of days we anticipate with the arrival of Fall. Speckled Trout are moving up on the shallow flats right on schedule. I like to fish cutbait this time of year for a couple reasons, it helps my customers catch Trout in shallow water and Reds are scattered on some of the same flats. We will routinely have days we will not fish any deeper than four foot, all day.
Of course there are other opportunities, the return of schools of Spanish Mackerel make for some very exciting nearshore fishing, and the Sand Trout are great fun for kids and new fisherman. Anyway, it’s a great time of year to fish Steinhatchee. Fish bite often, frequently, and regularly this month. Come see us!
