It’s still summertime here in Steinhatchee, but there are hints of change, a couple of mornings below 70 degrees will have you hunting a jacket for the boatride. Speckled Trout bite will pickup on the deeper flats. Shallow Trout should also bite more often with water temps dropping. We are also looking forward to our flats clearing up, or at least cleaning up. It is showing signs. Now we have a lot of conversation about the impact of dirty water on fish. I am mostly convinced it has more impact on fisherman than fish. Just like any other change in conditions. I think noisy baits and corks become more effective. Talking about the impact on fisherman, I’ll be glad when cleans up enough to see the difference between grass and sand, it helps me.
I have heard of some big schools of Reds, but have not found them yet myself. Redfish have been scattered for me. These fish should get easier to locate and catch soon as well, with cooling water.
Most everyone knows our scallop season ended around the 1st of August, as a result of the dirty water, with the exception of a few brave folks “grubbing” for them, wading and feeling for them. I opted to go to Homosassa where they have clear water and plenty of Scallops. As I write this report there’s 12 days left in the new extended season. I have one more trip, and then we’ll be back home and wide open on OUR Trout and Redfish flats. Spring 2013, we saw the best Speckled Trout fishing I can remember and the fall should be just as good.
