Although the prolonged cold weather has put a damper on much of the fresh and salt waterfishing in our region, the Ocklawaha River continues to produce trophy sized Largemouths.
On Thursday, Feb. 11, Mr. Lucas “Luke” Kemnitz (12), put on a fishing clinic for his father (Chad) and his grandfather (Terry).
Terry landed the big fish of the day, a Bass around 5 lbs, and Chad caught the first, while Luke caught and released over a half dozen Largemouths between 2 and 3 lbs. “The kids a natural”, I said. Grandfather Terry replied, “I taught him well”.
On Saturday, Feb. 13, I fished the same location for about 3 hours, and wound up with 6 nice Bass, one of which weighed 9.5 lbs.
So far, it has been a banner year for the Largemouths. I gotta say there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than targeting Trophy Bass with live bait.
Pictured below is Luke with one of several Bass he caught and released. Also, some old codger with a horseshoe up his sleeve, and a wall hanger on his hand!
