Cedar Key Florida Inshore Fishing Report
The Cedar Key redfish are on fire and they seem to like this fairly hot weather. Using gulps, shrimp and cut mullet seems to be on their diet. Fish the oyster bars, cuts and up close to the islands. The incoming tide seems best and moving water is important, plus you got-ta have enough water to get up close to them.
The trout are a little scare-ish right now, but being in 5 to 8 feet of water on the grass flats and out off the edge of sea horse reef seems to be working. People are getting results using popper corks and just a jig head, slow jigging off the bottom, they’re also using gulps and shrimp.
A few mackerel have been caught and some triple tail. The tarpon have been jumping all over the place and people are having fun catching and releasing them. The sharks are plentiful and super fun to catch, we have seen a lot of 5 ft plus being caught as well.
Cedar Key Florida Offshore Fishing Report
Well, the snapper have been awesome this year, the season closes September 4th, but they will be fun to catch and release. Please use circle hooks and release them unharmed, they are a wonderful resource for us.
The gag grouper have been tough to catch and harvest over 24”, but we are catching plenty under sized in 25 ft to 60 ft. The red grouper are really plentiful but with the same issue, just not big enough. I look for this fall and next season to be a banner year, they are healthy and rebounding from the bad red tide a couple years ago.
The kings should be coming thru late September and October. The grunts and sea bass are biting very well and are great table fare. We are still catching a couple of cobia, but I’m not sure if they’re coming back thru or they’re residents.
If you want a tug of war, the Goliath groupers are fun to play with, but you better have some stout tackle.
