Cedar Key’s December Inshore Fishing Report
With the cooler weather the Speckled Trout have been hungry and biting good in 3-5′ of water on the grass flats. They’re always a good bet go about a 1 mile southeast of snake key in the finger channels, out in front of Deadmans key. Both in front and behind North Key or east & west banks. Using popping corks with short leader and live shrimp or favorite plastic baits.
The Redfish seem to be biting better in the afternoon after it warms up or in the shallow holes around the islands, the airboat guys are loving it back in the creeks.
We been hearing of some people getting some Sheepshead around the docks and shallow rock piles, using shrimp and a knocker rig. We look for them to increase as the weather gets colder and then they will move off to the offshore structures in February and April.
Everyone seems to be having fun and catching lots of fish.
Cedar Key’s December Offshore Fishing Report
The Gag Grouper have been hungry in 30′ to 60′ on hard live bottom areas, they been hitting on frozen baits but threadfins and northern mackerel the best. Gotta get em fast though, the season closes dec 31 till next june.
The red grouper are OUT OF SEASON TILL JAN 1ST, but you can catch and release in 45′ to 65′. We hope the early closure helps us all out in the near future, letting them grow up, since we seem to catch a lot of 18″ fish and we still get some larger ones while Gag fishing but release them unharmed.
The grunts are plentiful and sea bass too, and very tasty. We generally use a chicken rig with 2 hooks and use cut squid and sardines for bait, if you don’t have a bite after 2 minutes, they already stole your bait.
The Amberjacks are plentiful around the wrecks but you gotta release them unharmed and season is closed until May but they sure are fun to catch.
It’s still too early to get the Sheepshead to bite good but it won’t be long and we’ll be having fun with them.
This time of year the fish are hungry and you will catch plenty, so come on down and enjoy the fun.
Time to fill your coolers and enjoy the day on the water. As always we’ll keep you posted! Till next time “Safe boating n tight lines”
Trust God n Be Blessed
