The red snapper are biting good in 85 to 96 feet of water on thread-fin herring, sardines, and live pin fish. We had the best luck keeping our baits about 10ft off the bottom.
The red grouper are on fire in 60 to 75 feet, but they are also in 40 to 50 ft, you’ll just get a lot more shorts in the shallower water. But they are there, hitting on thread fins, sardines, menhaden and cut mullet. Red grouper generally are not too picky.
The sea bass are also hitting well in 50 ft and of course, the “endangered gag’s” are just about everywhere, we seem to be releasing about 150 lbs per trip and we’re not trying to catch them.
Come on July 1, we are also noticing larger cobia offshore now. Look for bait pods in 50 plus feet of water where you’d normally find grouper. Have a rod ready, cause they come right up to the boat and you may only get one opportunity.
Till next time, tight lines and safe boating
