A Yankee Town, Florida Fishing Report from Yankeetown Florida Fishing Guide
Last Wednesday, November 18, one of my fishing partners and I ran about 30 miles off the Crystal River coast to check out the Grouper bite. Winds were out of the NE less than 5 knots and the skies were overcast, perfect conditions for an offshore trip.
No sooner than the first lines hit the bottom, we were both hooked up. Two “fat” Red Grouper, 19 inches long…..close but no cigar. Looked like it was going to be a good day, but we had our work cut out for us trying to find the “big ones”. After catching and releasing over 50 Grouper, both Red and Gags, we had one keeper in the box.
Best Grouper bite I have ever seen, but practically every one was just shy of the legal limit. I guess the bigger fish were a little further out. One thing for sure is that the Red and Gag Grouper populations are alive and well. Maybe it is time to lighten up on the limits the state has imposed on these fish and others. Best not get me started.
On the way in we fished around a few markers and hooked up on a decent Cobia. Start looking for the Grouper to get a little closer in as the water temps cool.
