December Cedar Key Inshore Fishing Report
The cooler weather has started to push the Redfish into back marsh areas, but they’re still being caught on the flats & oyster bars, and up close to the islands usually when the hi tide is in afternoon. The bars absorb the heat from the sun, so the water is a little warmer and the bait is attracted there.
As usual, cut mullet, shrimp or live pinfish, fished on the bottom is best.
The Speckled Trout bite has picked up. Remember when the cold fronts push through, the bite maybe slow, so be patient and try fishing both on top w/ a cork and just a jig head on the bottom, fish it slowly back to you.
Trout can be found at same places as for reds and out a-ways from islands, like south side of snake key, seahorse key and dead mans key, as well towards the back marsh behind rattlesnake key and Gomez key.
The Flounder and Sheepshead have been biting too. The Sheepshead bite will continue through march and get better next year (Jan, Feb & March) Sheepshead love fiddler crabs and shrimp, both frozen & live, on the bottom near rock piles and docks and pilings.
December Cedar Key Offshore Fishing Report
The Grouper bite has been great, the Gag Grouper are in 28 to 60 ft in the rocky & live bottom areas. I found when its cooler set on the spot longer and they will turn on and off but continue to bite. We use threadfins, northern mackerel, menhaden and cut mullet, plus the favorite, live pinfish.
The Red Grouper have finally showed back up, we have been doing well at same spots as gags and fishing the same way but we got better ones in 60 to 80 ft.
Won’t be long and we will be starting for Sheepshead on the nearshore rocks and structures, but its usually better after February.
Hurry and come on down, the gags close the end of the month but reds are open all year.
Hurry, dress warm, come on down and enjoy the fun. The gags season closes at the end of the month but reds are open all year.
Till next time “Safe boating n tight lines”
