Cedar Key’s May Inshore Fishing Report

The Redfish and Speckled Trout are biting good and the weather has been beautiful too. The Redfish seem to like the moving tide whether it’s in or out, around the oyster bars near, Deadman’s, North, Snake or Seahorse & Gomez keys. As usual we’re using jigs with cut mullet, shrimp or mud minnows, and the gulps work too.

For Speckled Trout use popping corks and shrimp or your favorite plastic baits, around the grass flats behind Snake Key, Sea Horse & North Key. They’ve been best in 3-5′ of water. The mackerel are all around too, so if you get cut off, change to a larger leader or steel. The sharks are hungry and fun to fight, we have been seeing some tarpon rolling too.
The Cobia are here and not in big numbers but they are here. They love live bait but will eat any chunks of bait too. This is a good time of year to have a variety of rods rigged and ready for what can happen at any moment.

Cedar Key’s May Offshore Fishing Report

The Grouper are hungry, but you can only keep the reds now. They seem to be in 55-80′ of water, we are getting a lot of shorts but we have got a few nice keepers too. The Amberjacks are plentiful, a lot of 30-32″ but we also got some nice keepers in the 25-35lb class too. We haven’t got a cobia offshore yet, the mackerel are around the bait pods, so be ready, we like to free line a rod out back while bottom fishing so we take advantage of both at the same time. We also have caught & released a lot of nice Red Snapper in 55-70′ so that’s nice know it won’t be long till we can keep em.

The fishing has been real good and there’s a lot of action this time of year. You can only harvest a few species but still fun, always release them unharmed, and enjoy the day on the water.
