Agreed...I would say anything around a 270 would work.

Freshwater Fishing Forum / Ocklawaha Fishing Report

For Bass…Go Early or Go Home

Our last several Largemouth Bass trips have been fairly productive. Although we have not seen large numbers of fish, the one’s we’ve caught have been really nice. Lots of 5 lb.ers and very few under the legal limit, 14 inches.

Recently the invasive plants, mainly Hydrilla and Coontail Moss, have made getting fish to the boat a challenge. The Middle Ocklawaha River has been very low and slow over the past year, which has promoted the growth of these non-native water plants.

Hopefully the recent rainfall and higher water level will slow their growth. As summer approaches, look for the bite to slow especially during the mid-day hours. As usual, get there early for best results.

Saltwater Fishing Forum / Steinhatchee Fishing Report

Here is a Steinhatchee Fishing Report originally from Captain Steve Kroll and published on our Saltwater Fishing Reports blog.

The only thing better than fishing on Monday, is fishing on Tuesday of course. Here in Steinhatchee we've had at least one tournament every Saturday since March. The community benefits from them, so don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, but you do look forward to seemingly having the place to your self on weekdays.

Speckled Trout fishing has been good on shallow and deeper flats, my favorite is shallow, so I'll start with that. Using mostly cutbait under corks, my parties and I have been able to catch limits most days. The days when we lose the breeze and therefore lose drift, we'll move to deeper flats (6-10 feet) and have been able to find Trout there as well, slow bouncing jigs on the bottom.

Large Specks are being caught in both deep and shallow. Also the deeper flats will give you a much greater level of activity, sharks, sea bass, bluefish, ladyfish and the like, which can be important to those with shorter attention spans. The deeper flats are a great place to take the kids to get their string pulled.

Redfish are starting to show much better in the usual places, hard bottom, creek mouths and points. Jigs, spoons and cutbait will do the job here. There are still some scattered on the shallow flats as well. Tarpon and keeper size Cobia have also shown up on the flats off the Dixie and Taylor County coast.

Sure it's hot in June, but so the fishing, come see us!
This Steinhatchee Fishing Report is from Steinhatchee, Fishing Guide & Steinhatchee Scallop Guide Captain Steve Kroll.

Ran into this today

These are the words you need to know and say: “I was in fear for my life. I wish to speak to my attorney. I do not agree to any search.” Never, never, ever allow the words “warning shot” to pass your lips. ”I was in fear for my life. I wish to speak to my attorney. I do not agree to any search.

...do NOT talk to the media. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court of law

The sad thing is being in fear of your life may be true but to watch every little thing that comes out of your mouth at a time like this is a joke.

In a recent report Captain Nick said he'd been fishing the flats and near shore oyster bars around the Levy County and Citrus County Coast with excellent results. Recently he went about 4-5 miles north of the Withalcoochee River entrance to fish the grass flats for Speckled Trout.  Moving further inshore to try his luck with the Redfish he anchored up to a favorite oyster bar and noticed several varieties of bait fish in the area. Always a good sign, he then caught a Trout over 20 inches on the first cast, a keeper Redfish on the second cast, and a nice Black Drum on the third.

* Here is a Cedar Key Fishing Report originally from Captain John Blouse and published on my Saltwater Fishing Reports blog.

We are mostly targeting red grouper, seabass, king fish, and the world famous grunts (Cedar Key Snapper).

The red grouper are biting great in 50 to 75 ft of water, but can also be caught in 35 to 45 ft of water, just not as many keeper size.

Of course the gags are on fire and are everywhere, but remember, ... they are over fished, go figure.

You can use sardines, thredfins, cut mullet or menhaden. The kings are biting from 35 to 60 ft of water, look for bait pods, free line a bait or troll thru them with a top lure and a stretch 25 or 35 and hang on.

The bigger seabass have been in the 40 to 58 ft range and they are nice ones, and your grunts can be caught just about anywhere. again, come on down, the weather has been great and the fish are on fire.

Till next time, tight lines and safe boating

The trout are in thick and the best reports are south of snake key in the finger channels in 5 to 10 ft of water.

Drifting and using a Cajun thunder popping cork and about 4 ft of leader line, #3 to #5 hook and baited with live shrimp, small pin-fish or gulps (new penny color).

The red fish are biting great as well, around any of the inshore oyster bars and inside dead mans channel.

A lot of cobia have been caught as well, site fishing on the flats or anchor up near channel makers, using live pin-fish, on the bottom and always have a rod ready to flip out to one that will just cruse right up to your boat.

Come On Down, The Fishing Is On Fire!

Here's a picture of a cobia that accompanied the report

Counted 18 redbelly beds in a short stretch, last year in the same area there were 24.
