Freshwater Fishing Forum / Re: Ocklawaha Fishing Report

* Here is an Ocklawaha Fishing Report I originally published in the Freshwater Fishing Reports blog.

The Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River, near Ocala, Florida  has exploded over the past few weeks.

Just today we caught and released a dozen Bass in about 2 hours, ten of them were over 5 lbs.! The big Bass of the day weighed almost 10 pounds. Not bad for late September.

As I’ve said before, “It’s football season”. That’s what these lunker Largemouths resemble, a football, short and fat!

‘Til next time, see yah on the River

This is basically the track of Issac near it's last days

And the drought monitor about two weeks after Iassac doesn't look like much of a change. Arkansas saw 8 inches in some place. Poor Georgia is still in bad shape.

Hopefully Issac will help Georgia.

Current drought conditions in the US and as you can see plenty of them. From http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/

I found this on another site, it's a good laugh and shows an interesting problem that most people don't think about.

I edited this post. Sorry, this video isn't as good as the original video. It's link was missing. It was a video of a guy shooting rats at a dairy in Australia. There appeared to groups of rats  numbering 10 to 20 in a group. Amazing the issue of rats in some areas.

Cedar Key Fishing Report (I orginally posted this in the OutdoorUpdate Fishing Report)

If you’re fishing offshore you can catch both gag grouper & red grouper in water as shallow as 30 ft, but there are plenty of shorts as well.

Also there have been good size sea bass in 30 to 40 ft on hard rocky bottom areas.

If you move out to 50 -60 ft, you will have a better chance of catching more keeper size grouper and the king fish are still around.

We, actually ran into a school of mahi-mahi last weekend in 45 ft of water. I noticed that most of the large bait pods were in 45 to 50 ft of water. We have been using thread fin, hearing, northern mackerel, menhaden and live pin fish for bait.

Trolling stretch 30′s works well too, just watch for the floating grass, if it gets caught up in the line it’s a pain. The water temp has been around 83 to 86, so the bite will slow down, till you go deeper.

I haven’t went after Amberjack yet since they re-opened on the 1st, but live bat will be the trick.

Cedar Key Fishing Report (I orginally posted this in the OutdoorUpdate Fishing Report)

There have been good reports of nice trout in 10 to 15 feet of water and some on the shallow flats.

Redfish have been good sizes around corrigans reef, osenotie, north key and inshore oyster bars. A moving tide is key, using cut mullet, finger mullet, shrimp and new penny gulps. If you just want to play with something that fights n jumps, use a chum bag, any of the frozen baits of your choice, sit back and hang on.

Yankeetown Fishing Report, (this report was also on the Saltwater fishing reports)

Near record high temperatures throughout the Big Bend region have really effected the fishing. Water temps are already up to 90 degrees. On our most recent trips the best bite for the Trout and Redfish has been very early in the morning, typical for late summer. For best result, plan your trip accordingly, and if possible fish the near shore waters around the high tide.

Grouper fishing off the Citrus/Levy County coasts remains pretty good between 25 and 30 feet of water. Although I expect them to move further out as water temps increase.

Record numbers for scalloping appears to be the hot ticket this summer. Try around the observation platform at the Crystal River channel for best results.

Our go to spot during these hot summer months has been the outer channel markers of the Cross Florida Barge Canal. A wide variety of fishes are caught here on a regular basis.

Thanks for the replies bhalverson, after rereading my comment above where I wrote
I've seen hogs killed with 30 30's, 45's shotguns and knives.

I guess I need to clear up the 45 part, I was hunting with some guys near Cheifland Florida and one of them had just bought some 45 colts, he had an old style colt 45 single single action.

He shot the hog three times and the hog wouldn't go down. The guys I was hunting with jumped on the hog, held it down and let the guy that originally did the shooting cut it's throat. Back in camp when the hog was being cleaned it was discovered that the 45's didn't go through the hogs hard plate, they stopped just under the skin.

Most 45 colt ammo is intended to be safe in older less sturdy firearms, this incident made me aware of this. Good thing the hog was small.

Also just a follow up, check with your local DNR...you have some gun restrictions in FL you will want to read up on.
