Ocklawaha Fishing Report
« on: Jun 21, 2012 »
* Here is an Ocklawaha Fishing Report originally from Captain Nick and published in the Freshwater Fishing Reports blog.

For Bass…Go Early or Go Home

Our last several Largemouth Bass trips have been fairly productive. Although we have not seen large numbers of fish, the one’s we’ve caught have been really nice. Lots of 5 lb.ers and very few under the legal limit, 14 inches.

Recently the invasive plants, mainly Hydrilla and Coontail Moss, have made getting fish to the boat a challenge. The Middle Ocklawaha River has been very low and slow over the past year, which has promoted the growth of these non-native water plants.

Hopefully the recent rainfall and higher water level will slow their growth. As summer approaches, look for the bite to slow especially during the mid-day hours. As usual, get there early for best results.

* Here is an Ocklawaha Fishing Report I originally published in the Freshwater Fishing Reports blog.

The Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River, near Ocala, Florida  has exploded over the past few weeks.

Just today we caught and released a dozen Bass in about 2 hours, ten of them were over 5 lbs.! The big Bass of the day weighed almost 10 pounds. Not bad for late September.

As I’ve said before, “It’s football season”. That’s what these lunker Largemouths resemble, a football, short and fat!

‘Til next time, see yah on the River

The fall Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River near Ocala has been, in a word, awesome!

Typically it’s late October before we expect to see big numbers of Largemouths over 5 lbs., but for whatever reason we’ve had a early fall bite for the record books.

Consecutive trips with Bass over 9 lbs. have been the rule rather than the exception. Lots of fish over 5 lbs. and very few under the 14 inch minimum. I can hardly wait for our first pre-spawn bite in November.

Octobers’ Largemouth Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River continues to be one for the books. Lots of 4 to 6 pounders, and 8 consecutive trips yielding Bass over 8 lbs..

The best time of day remains to be early morning or late afternoon. For best results, fish in and around the heavy cover. That’s where the wallhangers live.

Wild shiners, either free-lined or fished under a float, are hands down the best bait for getting that once in a lifetime Bass. Like I’ve said before, “You either got a wild shiner, or you need one”.

The Bass continue to bite on the Ocklawaha River near Ocala, although I expect our recent cold fronts to slow them down a bit. Looks like we’re in for a very early bedding cycle this year. Lot’s of yearling, or buck bass, schooling up both early and late in the day. A sure sign the Largemouths are getting ready to spawn.

Speaking of bedding Bass, this is the most important time of year to practice catch and release. Every time we release a fish, it protects the future of fishing for ourselves and generations to come.

THE BITE GOES ON

The Largemouth Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River continues.  Although the quantity of fish we typically catch has dropped, the quality has improved.

On our most recent trip one of my clients landed a "Lunker Largemouth" on his first cast that tipped the scales to 8 lbs.!  Not bad for November.

Recently the majority of Bass we've caught have been 4 to 6 lbs., and fat with roe.  These are spawning Largemouths about to go on the bed.  They should be handled with care and released.

Early morning continues to be the best time to fish, and as always, wild shiners are the best bait.

'Til next time...see you on the River

December Ocklawaha Fishing Report, the bass bite on the Ocklawaha River slowed a bit over the past week. Although we’re still catching quality fish, the numbers are down. I expect this trend to continue as the Largemouths bed over the next few weeks. Look for the bite to improve, and the numbers to go up after the spawn.

Water levels on the River are extremely low. As always use caution when on the water.

COLD FRONTS TRIGGER BASS BITE ON THE OCKLAWAHA

Despite the majority of Bass on the Ocklawaha River being on the bed, we are still getting good numbers of quality fish on most every trip.  Recent cold fronts have triggered the Largemouths to feed, and I expect this trend to improve as out most recent spawn nears it's end sometime in January.

The Largemouth Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River has continued to improve over the last couple of weeks.  Good numbers of keeper fish have been caught both in the early morning and late afternoon hours.

Wild shiners fished in and around the heavy cover are your best bet for that lunker Largemouth.  Look for the numbers to continue to improve as the spawning Bass come off the bed.

The Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River continues to be very good.  On a recent trip several of the Largemouths caught were busting with roe.  These spawning fish should always be handled with care and immediately released.

The very moderate weather we've seen this season has triggered the Bass back into spawning cycles.  Expect the bite to remain very good over the next few weeks.  Wild shiners remain the best bait for that Trophy Largemouth.

Bass fishing on the Ocklawaha River has been very productive over the past few weeks. Lots of Largemouths between 3 and 6 pounds have been caught with the occasional wall hanger being the rule rather than the exception. We’ve had several reports of trophy fish being caught in different locations along the Ocklawaha River. From Moss Bluff to Rodman Dam, the Largemouth bite has been hot throughout the region.

Wild shiners remain to be the best bait, and early morning or late afternoon seems to be the best time.

Check out Joe from Ohio with his first Ocklawaha Largemouth. Can’t think of a better way to celebrate a 14th birthday!

Just a heads up, the Largemouth bite on the Ocklawaha River last week was great. caught and released several Bass between 6 and 8 lbs. as well as several limits of keeper-sized fish.

Here's just one of the fish we caught
