THE HOT SPOT

THE HOT SPOT

If it ever stops blowing, I plan to fish the Progress Energy Hot Water Discharge Canal at Crystal River. We typically spend many days there each year, but this hasn’t been a typical year, or season.
I received a report yesterday that there had been a bad fish kill south of there, the Ozello area, where several hundred dead Snook, as well as Mullett, were spotted.

With the adjacent water temps dropping, the Discharge Canal should be the “Hot Spot”.

I hope to give a real time report soon

THE FISHING IS GOOD ON THE GULF OF MEXICO

Fishing off the Citrus/Levy Count coasts continues to be very good for this time of year.

Although we’ve limited most of our trips to half a day, fishing the early morning hours really pays off.

Recently we’ve been able to limit out on Spotted Sea Trout.  We’ve also caught our fair share of Spanish Mackerel, Pink Mouth Grunts, and a variety of other species, including the occasional Snook and Cobia.

In a word the fishing has been good.

I spotted a water spout one day last week. This is one of natures wonders you want to steer clear of.

Scallop season opened July 1st and closes Sept. 10th. Better get-um while you can.

BEAT THE HEAT

It’s that time of year again folks, summer, and it looks like it’s going to be a long hot one.

Record highs have already arrived, and if the water temp in the Gulf of Mexico (90 degrees) is any indication, we’re in for a very active season, storm wise that is.

We’re currently running a “Beat the Heat Special”, basically a half day fishing charter that begins around 6:30 a.m.. and ends before noontime.

The fishing has been exceptional, although we’ve had to move to deeper water in the late a.m..

Recently we’ve been catching Grouper, Cobia, Snook, Trout, Spanish Mackerel, and huge Pink Mouth Grunts, all without lifting the anchor. What a variety!

Tip of the week: Stay hydrated and don’t forget the sunblock!

Big Bend “GATORS-R-HOT”

Sorry for the delayed report, but we have been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks. This by far is our busiest time of the year, and sometimes there is just not enough hours in the day.

If you get the timing right, the Hot Water Discharge Canal at the Progress Energy Plant near Crystal River  is hard to beat.

Recently, lots of huge Gator Trout, as well as Snook and Black Drum have been taken there. The Trout bite has really been HOT, but the window of opportunity each day is short.

Try fishing as close to the barrier as possible, just before and after the high tide. Live shrimp on a knocker rig works really well.

Better get them while they are HOT.

When planning your next fishing trip on the Gulf, take the time to check out the Home page of this website, www.outdoorupdate.com and access the link to the wind forecast for the area that you are fishing. This forecast is updated by NOAA every 6 hours and provides you with best information for the safety of your fishing trip.

WHERE,WHEN and HOW

Best bet for February along the Citrus/Levy County coasts is Redfish.

From”Eleven Prong”, just south of the Waccassassa River entrance, to the spoils off of Ozello, reports of Redfish are coming in from everywhere.

That takes care of where. When, just before and after the high or incoming tide seems to work best for me, especially around the new or full moon (most extreme tides).

And finally, how.  Although Redfish will bite a large variety of bait, I prefer live or cut stuff, shrimp or mullet.

Note: Snook and Trout season re-opens on March 1st. Whoopee!
