Right Now, Steinhatchee Is For Catching Fish And Scalloping
Hey Gulf Lovers, My fishing report is brief this week.
The way the tide was and the customers I had, I fished only two mornings. We caught Trout, both Speckled and Sand, a few Sea Bass, Flounder, Bluefish and Jack Crevalle.
All great fun, but the story this week has been about the Scallop. Right now they are close to the river in both directions. This has allowed the crowds to spread out a little. There are also several reports of good scallops deep. By deep I mean 6-10 feet. It takes the strongest of snorkeler to pick up scallops in this depth. When you see one look for more before diving and continue to look on the way down, at the bottom, and on the way up to max your breath. Of course you don’t want to take the small kids to the deep water, it won’t be much fun for them.
Watch the weather, be careful and take your time when moving your boat around other boats. We see too many people running their boats on plane through groups of boats displaying diver down flags. You are not supposed to run on plane within 300′ of a boat displaying a dive flag. Think about it, that’s a football field.
Be safe, GOD Bless, Good Fishing (Scalloping)
And Thanks for reading,

A Nice Start For Some Steinhatchee Scallops
Speckled Trout Are Moving and The Red Fish Are In The Usual Places
It is only the 27th of May, but summer is here. Most days the wind has kept the heat tolerable, along with a good bite.
Speckled Trout have set up house on the deeper flats, 6-12feet deep. The shallow flats will still produce Trout in the morning till about 9 or 10 am and then they seem to quit, at which time we usually will move to the deeper flats or hunt Redfish.
Redfish seem to have a higher tolerance to the heat and bright sun. Fish for them in the usual places all summer, rocky and hard bottom areas, marsh points and creek mouths.
We are fishing Bass Assassin Kwik Cork rigs with cut pinfish in the shallows and slow hopping jigs with Salt Water Assassin 4″ and 5″ baits in the deeper flats. This also produces a great deal of bonus activity, Bluefish, Sea Bass, Flounder, Cobia, Spanish Mackerel and Ladyfish, lots of ladyfish. Take plenty of jigheads and baits. Also, take plenty of water.
Enjoy the Gulf!

A Late May Steinhatchee Red

Speckled Trout, It's What You Come To Steinhatchee For
Hello Steinhatchee Fishing Friends
Well what do I say? This is the second winter in a row that fishing has been a real challenge. We’ve had a great time with small Redfish, a occasional keeper, and some outstanding Trout catching. The problem has been the weather, cold, wind and rain. Speckled Trout is closed for February, and frankly, I’m glad they are getting a well deserved break from those who abuse the fishery during the fishes most vulnerable time.
I am taking time to do some equipment maintenance. I painted the bottom of the boat, cleaned out and reorganized boat compartments and tackle tubs. Inventory and check safety items, fire extinguishers, signal flares, PFD’s (life jackets). Clean, lube and restring rods and reels will save heartache later.
As soon as we have a couple of nice warmer days, we’ll go Redfishing or run out to 30 foot of water and catch a bucket full of Sea Bass.
In the meantime, Ann (my bride) and I are going on a cruise south in search of a winter tan.
Hang in there! Spring is not far away. The cypress trees on my pond have buds, as well as Maples. Come over to Steinhatchee Feb 19 & 20 for the Annunal Fiddler Crab Festival. Good food, music, river tours, something for everyone.

The Wind and Seas Weren’t the Best at Cedar Key But We Still Got Results
I had a party of 3 go for some grouper fishing, the wind and seas weren’t the best, we went to 45 ft and worked our way back to 25 ft.
We were using menhadden, sardines, and cut bait. we ended up with 5 nice gags, 1 red grouper, about 30 sea bass and some grunts, with a good amount of 1/2 inch shorts.
The red grouper are still alittle deeper, but plenty of gag grouper and sea bass. the bite was good all day and all were happy with plenty of fish. we didnt have live bait today, and I believe at 25 to 35 ft, live bait is best., so till next time, tight lines and good luck
Till Next Time, Good Luck and Tight Lines

Mid November Cedar Key Fishing Report, 10 miles offshore
We had a charter of 4, on a half day trip, headed to 25-28 ft of water.
It was kinda rough and “one didn’t fish”, but the other three had fun with plenty of keeper sea bass, grunts and 2 nice keeper grouper, with a few shorts that were released unharmed.
The bite was good and steady, we didnt have any live bait and I bet we would have done better with pin’s. All were happy, and I look for the keeper gags to be in 28–40 ft here from now on, but the reds will be in deeper water.
Till Next Time, Good Luck, Tight Lines and Safe Boating
