A Late Summer Steinhatchee Fishing Report
Greetings from Steinhatchee.
It’s still summer here, folks are out trying to get one or two more bags of Scallop meat for the freezer before the extended season closes Sunday the 25th of September. This hot weather makes scalloping very refreshing and a great way to top off a box of fish.
As the days are becoming shorter and we have some cooler(not as hot) days fish will begin to bite better, especially in shallow water. I have seen subtle changes already. Saturday, my party and I caught 10 nice Speckled Trout, including one over 20″s, and two over 18″s all 3 foot or less, and all on Saltwater Assassin 1/16oz jigheads with 5″ tails. Several colors were used, Night Shiner and Pink are the colors we used most.
Sand Trout or White Trout have began to show on the deeper flats and Spanish Mackerel won’t be far behind. There are a few here now, but not in the numbers we will see in a couple of weeks.
Redfish will be good one day and slow the next, but I guess that is partly what makes them so special, but hang on, in a few weeks a limit of Reds may be easier than a limit of Trout.
No matter what you decide to fish for, it’s going to be more comfortable to fish all day.

Cedar Key August Inshore Fishing Report
There are Lots of Redfish in by Dead Man’s Channel near the bars and grassy bottom area’s and good size trout have been caught in same area and out by Crest Mott and near Snake Key in the finger channels. And there are also have been some big black drum caught in 3 to 6 ft flats area’s and around the bars.
Use cut mullet, gulp rootbeer color, or live shrimp, you can’t go wrong.There are some scallops there as well, just not easy to find. Shark fishing is always an easy bet in the summer months and alot of fun.

Steinhatchee Scalloping And Fishing Report
Hello from Steinhatchee, at this writing it is the 3rd of August. My time in the boat has been primarily guiding scallop trips. And I’m thankful for them.
We are having a great time with our regular summertime customers, as well as alot of new ones. The fun that a family can have gathering scallops is not a secret anymore. I’ve had customers from as far south as Naples, and as far north as Ohio. Deadman’s Bay has once again shown itself to be the recreational scallop capital.
Let’s talk fishing though. Last week I took Scott and his two young sons fishing. We caught 4 Reds and 5 Trout, jumped a 50 lb Tarpon, which we got to see jump twice before breaking the 10 lb test. All before 9:30am, then we came back in the river and picked Mom and little sister. Headed to the scallop flats and picked up a boat limit of the tastey shellfish. We did all this within sight of the channel markers of the Steinhatchee.
Another recent trip, we fished deep flats first thing in the morning. Casting Saltwater Assassin jigheads with 4″ and 5″ chartreuse tails we caught six good Trout and 7 or 8 Sand Trout, a few Sea Bass and Bluefish. And of course a limit of Scallops.
Needless to say, we are having a great summer here at the Big Bend of Florida.
Keep an eye on the weather. I included a photo of one of three waterspouts we saw this day. I guessed it about 10 miles away-impressive!

Right Now, Steinhatchee Is For Catching Fish And Scalloping
Hey Gulf Lovers, My fishing report is brief this week.
The way the tide was and the customers I had, I fished only two mornings. We caught Trout, both Speckled and Sand, a few Sea Bass, Flounder, Bluefish and Jack Crevalle.
All great fun, but the story this week has been about the Scallop. Right now they are close to the river in both directions. This has allowed the crowds to spread out a little. There are also several reports of good scallops deep. By deep I mean 6-10 feet. It takes the strongest of snorkeler to pick up scallops in this depth. When you see one look for more before diving and continue to look on the way down, at the bottom, and on the way up to max your breath. Of course you don’t want to take the small kids to the deep water, it won’t be much fun for them.
Watch the weather, be careful and take your time when moving your boat around other boats. We see too many people running their boats on plane through groups of boats displaying diver down flags. You are not supposed to run on plane within 300′ of a boat displaying a dive flag. Think about it, that’s a football field.

A Nice Start For Some Steinhatchee Scallops
Scallop Season Is Here
Hey Florida Gulf Coast Fans,
Scallop season is here! A week early, thanks to the State. By all accounts the supply is very good. The Game and Fish survey done a few weeks ago said the scallop fishery was healthy. Recreational scallopers had no trouble gathering limits of the shellfish this last weekend. Clear water on the flats is making it easier as well, in both directions out of the Steinhatchee River.
So load the kids and your mask and snorkels, come on over. Bring your boat or hire a guide. There are several good Captains to take you and your group. Be careful when operating around other boats, especially when they have a diver down flag displayed.
Speckled Trout fishing is in the usual summer time pattern, shallow early and deep the rest of the day if not all day. Last month I talked about the slow presentation, which is necessary to catch the deep flat Trout.
Redfish continue to be for the most dedicated of fisherman, somedays it is a true hunting trip. Got to love the hunt!
I have included a photo of a Cobia, now we catch quite few on the flats while trout fishing, but one this size on trout tackle makes it more than a bonus fish. It was 35 pounds +.
