A Good Half Day In Cedar Key And In A Week It Will Be Great
The wind finally stop blowing and we headed out of Cedar Key at about 7:30 am with the water temperature at the dock at 68 degrees, when we crossed the reef it was 70 degrees and out at 45 feet it was 67 degrees.
The gags were biting but then all of a sudden the bite shut down. We didn?t have live bait and I’m positive that would have made a big difference.
We lost a couple nice ones with a free line behind the boat. With a threadfin on a kingfish rig we got hit two times and got 1- 20 plus pounder in the boat.
After that we moved inward since it was a 1/2 day trip, we then stopped in 35 ft to see what was happening, and the grouper were biting, we got one keeper grouper, grunts and sea bass.
We also lost another king there but for a couple hours fishing and traveling it wasn?t bad and in another week the water will be perfect for grouper fishing at 30-45 ft.
Although live bait in shallow water is always the good bet.

Its Starting to Get Fun
The last couple of weeks have been a lot of fun, as well as challenging. Water temps have moved to the upper 60′s and low 70′s.
Cool nights will slow the morning bites. Compared to recent years, we seem to be several weeks behind on the Spring warm up.
The reports of big Trout are numerous, up to 30 inches, and one above. I have included a photo of my biggest Trout taken this year so far, approx 27″long and 6 3/4 pounds. I did not lay her down to measure her. I was trying to get her back in the water as quickly as possible. I already had 3 Trout in the box over 20″s. My Boga gave me her weight and I have found to be accurate.
Redfish have been less than dependable. I think it’s because they are bunched up and moving around. If you find them you’ll have ball. But because they are moving they can be hard to stay in front of. That will change as water temps stabilize and the fish settle into more dependable patterns.
Offshore fishing has been good as well. Grouper, Seabass, Grunts and Sheephead have been available. Also Kings and Spanish. Offshore Captains continue to catch and release alot of Snapper, which are a no take species until June 1.

Hey Everyone, Mother Nature has been very nice to us offshore anglers lately, and she has allowed me to roam to some of my deep water haunts.
This trip was with some good friends of mine and their family. Russ did a complete over haul on the motor on my little truck and would not take any money for it, but asked if I would take him and some family members offshore fishing for the day. They had a great time and put a lot of fish in the boat of all verities.
The action was so good through out the day that I didn’t get a chance to snap many photos, but if you look at the pic-nic table………….there’s 10 feet of fillets ! ! !
September is almost upon us and that is when our fall fishing starts to pick up, so get with all of your fishing buddies and family members to get some dates together.
FOR THE MONTH OF SEPT. THESE ARE THE DATES I CAN FISH —?SEPT. 1st through 11th — 19th & 20th — 26th & 27th ! ! !
I have a BFCT fire class that I must attend for my State Job that I will be at during the week ONLY ! ! ! It starts on 9/13 and runs to 10/2, BUT I WILL be available to run on weekends.

Well, NOAA’s report said 10 kt winds and 2 ft seas, and it was 15 to 18 kt winds and 3-5 ft seas, so the trip was made short.
We fished the king fish hole area due to weather, we only fished till 2 pm, using sardines, cut mullet and live pinfish, we caught about 30 shorts and 5 keeper gag groupers, 1 king fish and a lot of sea bass and grunts, not bad for 20 ft of water @ 80 degs temp.
So if you dont have a boat to go offshore or the weather wont let you go, try the kingfish hole area, trolling plugs, bottom fishing and keep a free line out back w/ a whole sardine, thredfin or live bait, while bottom fishing and wait for your king or cobia to take it.

MIDDLE GROUNDS OFFSHORE OVER NITE TRIP
Bait: sardines, thread fin hering, live pin & pig fish
Left the dock around 10:30 am Sunday, with 2-4 ft sea and a 15 kt west wind, it was alittle rough, but we made the 80 mile run in about 3.5 hrs.
1st stop at a wreck, was on fire, amber jacks and grouper, lost some real big fish then the sharks moved in, so we moved on.
Next was some vermilion snapper, mango snapper and porgies, bite was a little slow in afternoon.
Next went to our nite time spot, cooked dinner, got lites all set up, and started fishin. The maongo?s were on fire and red grouper, then red snapper moved in and you could barely get your line down without them snatchin your rod out of your hand.
By 2 am we were limited out on, red snapper & mangos and went to sleep.
Woke up, hit another wreck, and wham, nothing but 20 plus lb red grouper, in 15 minutes we were limited out.
9 am headed back to the dock.
We caught 3 keeper amber jacks ( 40lb each) , 8 red snaper, 32 mangos, 30 vermilon snapper, 8 red grouper, some trigger fish and porgies. Plus we must of thrown back 30 keeper red snaper and red grouper, remember their being over fished! Ya rite.
