Early October Shallow Water Grouper Fishing

Took a party of 5 out Saturday morning, for a?half day of fishing. Half?day trips are always in close, we pulled pin fish traps, had about 6 dozen, plus sardines, threadfin’s and cut grunt’s for bait.

Our?1st drop was in 26feet, on some rocks & live bottom, bite was good and picked up 3 keepers, some shorts and a couple nice sea bass.

The next drop, 3 more keepers, and the same. last drop , 4 keeepers and some more sea bass, all gag’s, no red grouper.

The water temp was 75-79 deg. obviously the red grouper are still deeper, but nice it’s?to catch keeper gags within 10 miles of the shore.

The fishin is only gonna get better and the sea bass should be turning on some as well. That’s todays report, till next time.

Good luck and tight lines

Captain John’s Cedar Key Offshore Fishing Report

We headed out of the Florida Gulf Coast town of Cedar Key to a depth of about 50 ft for our 1st stop, seas were rough, the tide was strong andthe wind and the bite were good and steady all day. Every stop we made produced both gag grouper and red grouper, plus our famous Cedar Key Snapper ( grunts).

We moved around to about 4 stops, ranging from 50 to 58 ft. Five guy’s ended up with 7 keepers and about 50 shorts. It was the Not bad for the Offshore Special, all had fun and hopefully the bite should increase as water temps drop and the grouper should be moving in closer within the next month, till next time, tight lines and safe boating.

Good luck and tight lines

Offshore Fishing For Cedar Key, Florida For April 2nd & 3rd

The water temp was 63 degrees at the ramp, dropped to 62 degrees out in 45-58 ft of water but it warmed up to 63 degrees in afternoon.

The gag grouper, sea bass and Florida snapper (grunts) are biting good in 50 to 60 ft of water. It’s been hard to find any keeper red grouper in these depths. I believe there still out deeper, but there is plenty of shorts to catch and release. Haven’t seen any kings or cobia yet. nor is there a lot of bait pods, as soon as water temp. hits 68 to 72 degrees, things will change, maybe 1 or 2 weeks away.

We did catch some quality gags though, 12-15 lb’s. we did use some frozen?mullet & thread fins and cigar minnows but the bait of choice was live pinfish & porgies.

Good luck and tight lines

Cedar Key Fishing Report for 7-31, 8-1, 8-2 Saturday, The weather was a little hairy in the am, but it ended up turning out nice.

We started fishin in 45 ft, the grouper were biting good, but there were a lot of shorts, and mostly red grouper.

We then tried 55 ft, got few keepers there, but there sure are a ton of 19 inch red grouper out there. moved out to 70 ft and got the same results, talked to a few more guides and they had the same story.

Sunday, weather was perfect, I had a “sreach for new spots charter“, so we never went any deeper than 55 ft, caught a few keeper reds and 1 gag, but still another day of non stop short grouper, saw alot of bait pods, turtles, good bottom, also tried 38 ft on the way back in, you could barely get your line to the bottom before the red grouper were on your hook, all short but very fat and heavy.

I heard from another guide, who went to 80+ ft and did well with gags, reds and a few red snapper. So you can all the fun you want in close, but most of the keepers right now with these temperatures are out deeper.

Hope You Have Good Luck in All That You Do
