GLOBAL WARMING?

GLOBAL WARMING?
It is almost November and the water temps in the Gulf of Mexico off of Inglis are still in the 80′s.
The Redfish bite has been good around the Withalacoochee River entrance recently, but as usual the tide and time of day is everything.
Best bet is to fish on the morning when the high tide peeks before noon, and preferably near or on the new or full moon. The more extreme the tide the better.
I recommend using the Florida Sportsman Fishing Planner to keep track of these tides. It’s a great publication that gives you a full year of tide charts, bite times, etc.
The Spotted Sea Trout are also biting, and although we are getting smaller numbers, the fish are bigger.
Fish for Trout on the falling or out going tides. Recently we have had luck with them about a mile north of the “Trout Stake”, just off the Levy County Coast. Trout on the Grass Flats in November…unbelievable!
Record high temps have also kept the Grouper offshore. I expect to see them moving in as soon as the temps get back to normal.
Speaking of temps, what happened to Fall/Autumn? Doesn’t it usually cool off by now? Must be Global Warming!

A Quick Change
This Steinhatchee Fishing Report is from Steinhatchee Fishing Guide Captain Steve Kroll
We went from summer to winter overnight.
Surface water temp dropped 20 degrees in 4 days.
It has been interesting hunting fish. I found Trout the last couple days in potholes, yes the water was cold, but I really think they were there because of no water on the flats.
Negative low tides with a Northeast wind means very low tide.
We caught Reds also and as I think I mentioned last week, we caught some Sandtrout.
Some of the last few days have been tough conditions, but as I often say “you don’t know if you don’t go”. But I can say I was glad not to go Sunday morning. It was 43 degrees and blowing 20 knots, which makes windchill in the teens, I think. COLD!!
The photo below is Benny Arnold from the central GA area, with a oversize red he caught while fishing for Sandtrout. Quite a fish on light tackle.
Thanks for checking in.

Summertime In October
An Indian Summer
Well I’ve heard it called Indian summer. Summertime weather in October.
What ever it is, it’s hot. After the little cool down we had two weeks ago, water temps are back up in the low 80′s. We should be experiencing a strong shallow water bite by now. Instead we are Trout fishing in 6-9 foot deep flats. We do have sandtrout though. Reds are scattered and unpredictable, but can be found.
In the picture you will see Meacy Morton from the Atlanta area with, what I call, a bonus fish. She hooked the small Tarpon while we were Redfishing.
Landing a fish much bigger probably would not have happened on 10lb tackle. This Tarpon gave us 5 or 6 big jumps. We guessed it to be about 30lbs. Goes to prove what people always say ” you never know what you might catch on the flats”.
God Bless and Good Fishing

A Three Hour Tour
A Good Half Day
On a recent trip to the Grass Flats off the Levy and Citrus County Coasts, we caught several “Gator Trout” along with the usual “by catch”, as well as 5 slot sized Redfish.
Got kind of a late start, left the dock at 10:30 a.m., but caught the last of a good flood tide. Headed north from the Withalocochee River entrance about 5 miles, and started drifting for Trout in the Lowes Bay Area.
Only fished from about 11 a.m. until 2, but for that short period of time, the bite was definitely on. To top it off, most of the Reds were pushing the top of the slot, and the smallest Trout caught was 18 inches long.
Had to get back to Ocala by 4, so we called it a day. Not bad for a three hour tour.
