A Full-timers RV Insurance Checklist

By firedude

Full-timers insurance is MUCH more than just an auto policy! Look at it as a home owners insurance which in fact in all reality it is. There are MANY things your regular auto policies DO NOT cover! Contents is one. Most insurance companies limit the amount of coverage on contents to $250 or thereabouts! My laptop alone is worth 10 times that much. Below is a checklist of coverage’s that I feel need to be in your full-timers policy, but not limited to. Some people insure their tow vehicle or toad through a separate company like me where I get a better rate for that.

____ Comp and Collision

____ Full Replacement cost. My and most policies will replace your RV with a current years model for the first 5 years. After that they will reimburse you your purchase price of the unit!

____ Personal Liability. This is for the guy who walks into the corner of your slide-out and cuts his head or your errant golf ball etc. Mine is 1 Mil. This is a must!

____ Storage contents. For those who have belongings in a fixed storage facility. (may not apply to all)

____ Trip Interruption coverage. Mine pays up $750 towards lodging, rental car and incidentals should the RV have to go into the shop.

____ Contents. This is a biggie, DO NOT sell yourself short. Take inventory and put the figures together. The higher the amount the higher the cost, but in my case not in leaps and bounds. Do not sell yourself short here with this! Mine is 10K. my laptop and Honda 2000 generator alone are worth $4. I may up the contents this year to $12-14K.

____ Fire and theft

These are the bare bones. You can ad other coverage’s and you also set the deductible amounts. Many people think just because their auto policy extends to their trailer or a normal auto policy on a motor home is all they need. I made that mistake at first until I realized I had NONE of the above except comp and collision! My contents were only covered to $250!!! I have basically what you see above with on my 5th wheel and costs $730 a year. $73 per mo. For 10 months. Remember your RV is now your home. You need homeowners insurance and that is exactly what Full-timers Insurance is. Protect yourself!! One warning. Most full-timer insurance does not apply to warranty items. Like the Trip Interruption coverage would not apply either there are several companies out there. Shop around for the best quotes. Check with other forum members on their coverage and the companies they deal with.
