Cooler Weather Is Going To Improve The Cedar Key Fish Bite

Cedar Key Florida Inshore Fishing Report

It’s still hot, but the red fish like it and they have been biting good. They love cut mullet, shrimp and hit good on the plastic baits too. The trout have started hitting again and they seem to be in the deeper grass flats, but we are catching them when red fishing too around the bars and shallow waters. We look for them to move back to the shallow grass flats in October, water temp is still 85 deg now. The mackerel are hitting good out on the flats and out front near sea horse reef. We have plenty of sharks to play with, haven’t seen many Tarpon lately. As the water temp tends to drop the drum, whiting and sand trout should start hitting good too.

The red grouper are plentiful, we are catching a few keeper size, but most are still small. The gags are hit and miss, we seem to be catching them in 50 to 70 ft. The Amberjack’s are still open and can be found on the offshore wrecks, they love live bait best. The grouper are hitting on frozen baits just as good as live bait. We did get a couple kings and they should be moving back real soon. The grunts and sea bass are always hungry and can be caught in 30 to 70 ft.

The Redfish bite is on fire, they love it hot. In Cedar Key, anglers are catching them all around the islands, oyster bars and grass bars. They favor fresh cut mullet and hit on your favorite gulps and plastic baits too.
The trout are a little sluggish and have moved out on the edges of the reef but they’re still are being caught on the grass flats using popping corks with shrimp, plastic baits and slow sinking lures. There has been some triple tail, Spanish Mackerel and plenty of caught sharks too. A few people had reports of Snook and we look for the bite only to get even better as fall approaches as well.

The grouper are biting good in 35 to 70 ft of water, we seem to be getting more keepers in the deeper water. The red grouper are coming back good and there’s plenty of them but they’re still just a little small. The Gag Grouper are doing good also. We do well using threadfins, mullet, menhaden and live pins. The Kingfish and Cobia should be showing up again through October. We have been seeing schools of Spanish Mackerel and using a chum bag and casting plugs and spoons to bring them in, it’s a lot of fun and they’re eat good too. The grunts and sea bass are plentiful as well.

The weather and the water in Cedar Key has have been hot, and the bite is going up and down. The trout are moving in the deeper, cooler water now, in around 4 – 7 feet. They’re out on the edge of seahorse reef in the grassy edges and pot holes. Use popping corks and slow jigging just off the bottom with your favorite plastic baits, shrimp and small live bait for results. The redfish are hitting good on the oyster bars, cuts and near the islands, they seem to like the incoming tide better. There has been some nice triple tail caught, the tarpon are rolling too and there are plenty of sharks to be caught too.

Well we had a great snapper season in Cedar Key! Hard to believe we gotta wait until next June. The gag grouper bite is good in 50 – 80 ft of water on hard and live bottom areas and the red grouper are biting but are still small. The King Fish are still here in 60 – 80 ft of water and there’s some cobia too. And of course, the sea bass and grunts always seem to be hungry. There seems to be a lot of sharks this year, bulls, sandbar, sharp nose and nurse sharks. The snapper are still thick in 60-80 feet of water but you must release them unharmed.

The action is good, and they are all biting on threadfins, mullet, sardines and live baits. In Cedar Key, Amber Jack season opens back up in August, so get ready for the battle.
