A Three Hour Tour

A Good Half Day

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotOn a recent trip to the Grass Flats off the Levy and Citrus County Coasts, we caught several “Gator Trout” along with the usual “by catch”, as well as 5 slot sized Redfish.

Got kind of a late start, left the dock at 10:30 a.m., but caught the last of a good flood tide. Headed north from the Withalocochee River entrance about 5 miles, and started drifting for Trout in the Lowes Bay Area.

Only fished from about 11 a.m. until 2, but for that short period of time, the bite was definitely on. To top it off, most of the Reds were pushing the top of the slot, and the smallest Trout caught was 18 inches long.

Had to get back to Ocala by 4, so we called it a day. Not bad for a three hour tour.

A Yankee Town, Florida and Crystal River Florida  Fishing Report
From Gulf Coast Fishing Guide Captain Nick

Caught a break in the wind Friday, 4/24, and ran offshore about 20 miles west of Yankeetown to fish for Grouper/Cobia.

Hadn’t been to this particular spot in about 2 months, and apparently neither had anyone else!  Caught about a dozen Gags ranging from 5 to 10 lbs in the first hour of fishing!

Hadn’t spotted a Cobia yet, but was running low on bait and decided to move off our spot just long enough to regroup and resupply the live well with pinfish.

We returned to our original spot about 30 minutes later.  No sooner than the anchor touched down, we found ourselves surrounded by Cobia!

Sight fishing Cobia…Man, it just doesn’t get much better than that.

Wound up catching several Cobia in the 20-30 lb. class, along with a few more Grouper to end Another Perfect Day!

Fishing Report, This time of year its best to be an Early Bird

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Gulf of Mexico (Cedar Key to Crystal River)

High water temps have pushed most everything we fish for to deeper water. Lately, the best Trout bite has been early morning, in 6 to 8 feet of water. We’ve recently been fishing the grass flats in the Lowes Bay area with mixed results.

The Reds have also moved out of the creeks into deeper, cooler waters around the outside oyster bars and spoil islands of the Withlacoochee Reefs (Yankeetown).

Most Grouper reports I’ve recently heard of indicate they are offshore in 40 to 60 feet of water, and few and far between. Not a very good Grouper report but it is what it is.

Recently our nearshore strategy has been to fish the grass flats for Trout in the early a.m., the spoil island and bars for Reds mid morning, then chase the birds for some Spanish Mackerel/Bluefish action around mid-day…good way to fill that cooler.
