The Good News, We’re Still Able to Get Our Scallop Limits

I’ve Got Good News And Not So Good News

pepperfish_key_galmour_shotThe good news is we’re are still able to find limits of scallops. The bad news is we are having to look harder and dive deeper. The easy ones have been hit hard.

Our catching fish success has been spotty, which is normal for summer. That is the not so good news. You have to love to fish and enjoy it even when the catching is slow. My last trip gave us a real mixed bag, Trout, Sea bass, Jacks, Blues, Flounder and Ladyfish, before lunch and then we jumped in and picked a couple buckets of scallops.

Another day in paradise!

Steinhatchee activities dominated by scallop trips

Scallops Dominate

pepperfish_key_galmour_shotOur activities continue to be dominated by scallop trips. Which is a good thing.

We are thankful for such a wonderful resource to enjoy and share!

But, for me,  nothing can substitute the pull of a upper slot size Red, or the violent head shake of a 22″ Trout in 18″s of water. So I go. Flats fishing in warm water is challenging. The rewards for determination will come one out of 3 days. I like to say “you won’t know if you don’t go”.

So fish early, safe light is between 6:30 & 7, and scallop when the temp gets up.

pepperfish_key_galmour_shotHey fisherman and scallopers, What a pleasant surprise. The state of Florida gave us an average report or scallop count. Gainesville Sun reported the count was half of the previous year. I am not here to say they were wrong, only that the areas where they performed their data collection was not the area we are gathering scallops. We all hope that it will hold up.

Mean while, I have been doing some early morning fishing trips. Our success has been mixed. Great topwater bite one morning, Reds and Trout. I watched a 30″ Red come out of the water and take a “spook”. I’ve caught reds on top before, but never had I seen such a strike. Also, last week, myself and a customer were able to get 4 jumps out a 90lb Tarpon. I’ll keep you posted. And include photos.

I first want to mention the offshore fishing. It’s been great, especially now that red snapper are legal to keep.  I have seen some real nice catchs at the dock.

Inshore has been very productive as well. Trout have been big. Over 20″ fish have been common. These trout have been caught shallow and deep. Last week was quite hot, but we had a breeze every day, keeping it bearable.

I’m not sure how long they’ll be around, but we have been experiencing the “luxury problem” I have spoke of before- oversize reds-alot of them. I included some photos- 30-37 inchs. The 37″ weighed 17lbs on my BOGA scale.

I have not gotten in the water scouting scallops yet, but looking over the side of the boat, I’m seeing plenty.

BETTER GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN!!

Snook season opened Sept. 1 and closes Nov. 30. Don’t forget the required stamp and the latest slot limit, 28-33 inches. Also, scallop season closes next weekend, Sept. 10, so again, Better get-em while you can!

To be perfectly honest, we haven’t fished the Gulf of Mexico since last Friday (8-29). Fortunately we’ve been very busy fishing the Ocklawaha River for Bass this week, with excellent results, 59 Bass in 3 short trips! Gotta get them while you can!
