THE SEATROUT ARE ON!

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Once again the stars all lined up and we got back out to the Gulf of Mexico. I can’t remember a windier winter/spring season ever.

Although last Wednesday, 4/7, was one of the worst days this month to fish (tide wise), the weather was cooperating, so we headed out to do some prospecting.

We started out fishing for Reds around the Withalacoochee Reefs” area, just off the Levy County Coast, without much luck. Only caught a couple “Rats”, and not much else.

As the tide started ebbing, we ran out to the grass flats for some Trout action. The water temperature reached 74 degrees by 2 p.m., and the bite was on!

Although we didn’t get any huge “Gators”, the bite was good for most of the afternoon. Considering the very weak tide, we did very well.

David Smith, pictured below, got a big surprise on the last cast. A 12 lb. Jack Cravelle caught under a Cajun Thunder with 12 lb. test line.

A Good Half Day

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotOn a recent trip to the Grass Flats off the Levy and Citrus County Coasts, we caught several “Gator Trout” along with the usual “by catch”, as well as 5 slot sized Redfish.

Got kind of a late start, left the dock at 10:30 a.m., but caught the last of a good flood tide. Headed north from the Withalocochee River entrance about 5 miles, and started drifting for Trout in the Lowes Bay Area.

Only fished from about 11 a.m. until 2, but for that short period of time, the bite was definitely on. To top it off, most of the Reds were pushing the top of the slot, and the smallest Trout caught was 18 inches long.

Had to get back to Ocala by 4, so we called it a day. Not bad for a three hour tour.

A Steinhatchee Fishing Report From Pepper Fish Key Charters

pepperfish_key_galmour_shotBig Bend fishing fans, the Reds have bunched a little, and what that means is that when you can get yourself in front of one of these schools, they’ll bite and bite hard. I think it’s their competitive nature when bunched up.

Twice last week I was able to get the boat in the right place at the right time. We caught two upper slot Reds the first morning and six the next, on topwater! Reds on top is an awsome strike. While waiting on Reds to show we caught some nice Trout on top as well.

By the end of the week the flats warmed up quite a bit, and the Trout bite slowed.

Hang on though, there is a forcast low of 58 Thursday morning. I am looking forward to some great fall fishing cranking up in a few days.

GOD Bless and Good Fishing

Change Is In The Air

pepperfish_key_galmour_shotHey Everybody, Scallop season ended on the 10th and we are already into full swing with our fall fishing schedule.

Trout continue to bite sporadically, deep and in shallow flats. I’m fishing cut bait under corks to produce the best trout catches. Gulp under cork works also. I think as the water cools a little more, artificials will do the job.

Redfish have been very dependable most days. They are still scattered though. But I know fall is in the air, I’ve caught Reds in places  that I had not seen them this summer. Change is good, and I don’t mean the kind our president is pushing.

God Bless and Good Fishing
Captain STEVE KROLL

P.S. The offshore reports have been sporadic also, cooling water however, is going to help that fishing as well.

P.S.S. Check back in soon, I’ll write about my snook trip to the Everglades with my Dad that we recently went on.

Coming Soon a September Improvement

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotRecently, lots of Reds have been caught in a variety of near shore locations up and down the Nature Coast/Big Bend Region.

From Eleven Prong, just south of Wacassasa Bay, to the Homosassa River entrance, reports of good numbers of Reds keep coming in with two things in common, tide and time of day.

The vast majority of these fish have been taken in the early a.m. hours, and just before or after high tide.

I expect that soon the water temps will be decreasing and the fishing in general will be improving.

You can also take a look at last years September Reports to see what was going on then.
