Hey fellow Alaskans! Greetings From Steinhatchee

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 by Steve Jones No Comments »

Hey fellow Alaskans, well that’s what it’s felt like to me. I have never run out of firewood, but I might this winter. I took one of my special customers fishing last week. And when the catching is really slow, he enjoys exploring like I do.

It is the kind of activity that will pay off later. We found a few Reds, however we could not coax them to bite.

While doing River tours for the Fiddler crab festival, which by the way was a huge success, I saw a nice size school of mullet up the river. It was the most finned life I had seen in a while. Fish will adapt and survive.

I am ready for warmer weather! I am going to take the next couple weeks and do some boat maintenance.

Thanks for checking in , stay warm and GOD Bless.

GOD Bless and Good Fishing

PS- The attached photo was from a few weeks ago. the short Red was caught in the Steinhatchee River. The young man was quite happy.

NATURES WAY

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 by Captain Nick of Slick Charters No Comments »

The stars all lined up last Thursday, 1/28, and we finally got the opportunity to get over to the Progress Energy Hot Water Discharge Canal at Crystal River.

Friday the 29th was the full moon, so we had the advantage of an extreme high tide around 1 p.m., along with light east winds and mild temps.  The perfect day, or so it seemed.

As we shoved off, I couldn’t help but think about the recent fish kills in the area, and what if any effect it would have on the fishing.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have to go very far before seeing the first signs of bad news.

Hundreds of Vultures (Turkey Buzzards), lining the Spoil Banks. Although we didn’t spot any floating fish, there were several dead Snook and Mullet littering the Spoil Islands.

About four years ago we had a few extremely cold days that left us with similar results.  Fortunately, it only slowed the bite for a couple of weeks, then fishing got back to normal.

It’s just Mother Natures way.

Lots of the fish that are killed during these severe fronts are species that are not native to our region, and can’t survive in low water temps. Snook is the perfect example.

Needless to say, it was a pretty slow day at the Canal.  Just caught a few Snappers and a couple of small Black Drum.

Hopefully, by the time the Trout season re-opens, March 1st, things will be getting back to normal.  Until then, you can find me on the OK (Ocklawaha) River.  The Trophy Bass are “schooling up”

FWC Temporarily Closes Snook Bonefish And Tarpon Seasons

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 by Steve Jones No Comments »

FWC issues an executive order that temporarily extends closed fishing seasons for snook statewide until September and establishes temporary statewide closed seasons for bonefish and tarpon until April.

For more info, the FWC News Release

However catch and release is still allowed. For more info

Also some good news I was talking to Don at Cedar Key Marina yesterday and he said the mullet kills weren’t as bad as last year. He said the mullet were in deeper water during the cold temps this year than they were last year.

THE HOT SPOT

THE HOT SPOT

If it ever stops blowing, I plan to fish the Progress Energy Hot Water Discharge Canal at Crystal River. We typically spend many days there each year, but this hasn’t been a typical year, or season.
I received a report yesterday that there had been a bad fish kill south of there, the Ozello area, where several hundred dead Snook, as well as Mullett, were spotted.

With the adjacent water temps dropping, the Discharge Canal should be the “Hot Spot”.

I hope to give a real time report soon

MIDDLE GROUNDS OFFSHORE OVER NITE TRIP

Bait: sardines, thread fin hering, live pin & pig fish

Left the dock around 10:30 am Sunday, with 2-4 ft sea and a 15 kt west wind, it was alittle rough, but we made the 80 mile run in about 3.5 hrs.

1st stop at a wreck, was on fire, amber jacks and grouper, lost some real big fish then the sharks moved in, so we moved on.

Next was some vermilion snapper, mango snapper and porgies, bite was a little slow in afternoon.

Next went to our nite time spot, cooked dinner, got lites all set up, and started fishin. The maongo’s were on fire and red grouper, then red snapper moved in and you could barely get your line down without them snatchin your rod out of your hand.

By 2 am we were limited out on, red snapper& mango’s and went to sleep.

Woke up, hit another wreck, and wham, nothing but 20 plus lb red grouper, in 15 minutes we were limited out.

9 am headed back to the dock.

We caught 3 keeper amber jacks ( 40lb each) , 8 red snaper, 32 mango’s, 30 vermilon snapper, 8 red grouper, some trigger fish and porgies. Plus we must of thrown back 30 keeper red snaper and red grouper, remember their being over fished! Ya rite.

CEDAR KEY LOCAL OFFSHORE

THE BITE IS GOOD FOR , GROUPER , KING FISH, COBIA, IN 45 —-75 FOOT OF WATER

BAIT OF CHOICE IS LIVE PIN FISH, BUT SARDINES, THREAD FIN HERING, CUT MULLET & MEHADEN WORK GREAT TOO.

WHILE YOUR BOTTOM FISHIN FOR GROUPER, ALWAYS THROW OUT BACK A FREE LINE, RIGGED WITH WIRE LEADER, #9 CIRCLE HOOK WITH A WIRE STINGER WITH TREBLE HOOK, USE A SARDINE, THREADFIN OR LIVE BAIT.MAKE SURE TO LEAVE YOUR DRAG SET LOOSE, SO THE KING CAN RUN AND NOT PULL THE HOOK, HANG ON AND ENJOY THE FIGHT!
