Grouper, Alive and Well In The Gulf of Mexico

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotLast Wednesday, November 18, one of my fishing partners and I ran about 30 miles off the Crystal River coast to check out the Grouper bite. Winds were out of the NE less than 5 knots and the skies were overcast, perfect conditions for an offshore trip.

No sooner than the first lines hit the bottom, we were both hooked up. Two “fat” Red Grouper, 19 inches long…..close but no cigar. Looked like it was going to be a good day, but we had our work cut out for us trying to find the “big ones”. After catching and releasing over 50 Grouper, both Red and Gags, we had one keeper in the box.

Best Grouper bite I have ever seen, but practically every one was just shy of the legal limit. I guess the bigger fish were a little further out. One thing for sure is that the Red and Gag Grouper populations are alive and well. Maybe it is time to lighten up on the limits the state has imposed on these fish and others. Best not get me started.

On the way in we fished around a few markers and hooked up on a decent Cobia. Start looking for the Grouper to get a little closer in as the water temps cool.

GLOBAL WARMING?

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotIt is almost November and the water temps in the Gulf of Mexico off of Inglis are still in the 80’s.

The Redfish bite has been good around the Withalacoochee River entrance recently, but as usual the tide and time of day is everything.

Best bet is to fish on the morning when the high tide peeks before noon, and preferably near or on the new or full moon. The more extreme the tide the better.

I recommend using the Florida Sportsman Fishing Planner to keep track of these tides. It’s a great publication that gives you a full year of tide charts, bite times, etc.

The Spotted Sea Trout are also biting, and although we are getting smaller numbers, the fish are bigger.

Fish for Trout on the falling or out going tides. Recently we have had luck with them about a mile north of the “Trout Stake”, just off the Levy County Coast. Trout on the Grass Flats in November…unbelievable!

Record high temps have also kept the Grouper offshore. I expect to see them moving in as soon as the temps get back to normal.

Speaking of temps, what happened to Fall/Autumn? Doesn’t it usually cool off by now? Must be Global Warming!

A Three Hour Tour

A Good Half Day

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotOn a recent trip to the Grass Flats off the Levy and Citrus County Coasts, we caught several “Gator Trout” along with the usual “by catch”, as well as 5 slot sized Redfish.

Got kind of a late start, left the dock at 10:30 a.m., but caught the last of a good flood tide. Headed north from the Withalocochee River entrance about 5 miles, and started drifting for Trout in the Lowes Bay Area.

Only fished from about 11 a.m. until 2, but for that short period of time, the bite was definitely on. To top it off, most of the Reds were pushing the top of the slot, and the smallest Trout caught was 18 inches long.

Had to get back to Ocala by 4, so we called it a day. Not bad for a three hour tour.

Coming Soon a September Improvement

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotRecently, lots of Reds have been caught in a variety of near shore locations up and down the Nature Coast/Big Bend Region.

From Eleven Prong, just south of Wacassasa Bay, to the Homosassa River entrance, reports of good numbers of Reds keep coming in with two things in common, tide and time of day.

The vast majority of these fish have been taken in the early a.m. hours, and just before or after high tide.

I expect that soon the water temps will be decreasing and the fishing in general will be improving.

Its the Time of Year to Make Lemonade Out Of Lemons

LEMONADE?

slick-charters-saltwater-glamour-shotYes lemonade, although we are in the middle of what is called the “Dog Days of Summer”, there are still fish to be caught around the Levy/Citrus County coasts. As a matter of fact, if you’re looking for numbers, and aren’t picky about the species, it’s an especially great time of year for the young anglers.

There are an abundance of what we consider ”by catch” that will keep the kids busy for hours. Also, these fish are just a short ride from the dock, provide non-stop action, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Most experienced anglers might not be to enthused about fishing for these “non-targeted” species, but just ask any 12 year old if he or she wants to go SHARK fishing and watch the reaction.

Presently the Big Bend area is loaded with several varieties of Sharks, as well as Spanish Mackerel, Catfish, Jack Cravelles, Sting Rays, and more.

Let’s take these lemons and make lemonade!
