Time To Take Advantage Of Spawning Bass

Friday, March 12th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

This years first pre-spawn bite that we have been taking advantage of has started tapering off. From early December of “09, until late February “10, we experience some of the best Bass fishing on the Ocklawaha River that I can recall.

Although the bite has recently slowed, we are still managing to get a few nice Bass each trip, with the occasional lunker (5 lbs. or better).

I expect for the next month or so we are going to see a few slow days, but I am looking forward to a great post-spawn bite.

Speaking of spawning Bass, if you want next years fishing to be as good as this years, release any bedding/spawning Bass unharmed. It’s only good sense not to harvest your crop before it reproduces.

Trophy Ocklawaha Bass

Monday, February 15th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

Although the prolonged cold weather has put a damper on much of the fresh and salt waterfishing in our region,  the Ocklawaha River continues to produce trophy sized Largemouths.

On Thursday, Feb. 11, Mr. Lucas “Luke” Kemnitz (12), put on a fishing clinic for his father (Chad) and his grandfather (Terry).

Terry landed the big fish of the day, a Bass around 5 lbs, and Chad caught the first, while Luke caught and released over a half dozen Largemouths between 2 and 3 lbs. “The kids a natural”, I said. Grandfather Terry replied, “I taught him well”.

On Saturday, Feb. 13, I fished the same location for about 3 hours, and wound up with 6 nice Bass, one of which weighed 9.5 lbs.

So far, it has been a banner year for the Largemouths. I gotta say there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than targeting Trophy Bass with live bait.

Pictured below is Luke with one of several Bass he caught and released. Also, some old codger with a horseshoe up his sleeve, and a wall hanger on his hand!

And The Bite Goes On … And The Bite Goes On

The Largemouth bite that is. So far we’ve had a great pre-spawn Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River. Over the past several weeks, I’ve concentrated on the area between the confluence, near Ocala, where the Silver River flows into the Ocklawaha, and Gores Landing just south of Ft. McCoy, with excellent results.

Since Christmas, we have landed several Largemouths over ten pounds, with the average fish weighing about 4 pounds. Not bad, huh?

I expect this great bite to continue up until the Bass go on the “bed”, around our next full moon, Jan. 30th. My recommendation is to get ‘em while the getting is good.

Below, Jason Worth (of Ocala) shows off the 10 lb. “football” he caught and released on Dec. 30th. Not many people can say they’ve ever caught much less released a Bass like that. That’s the mark of a true sportsman.

THE SPAWN IS ON!

slick-charters-freshwater-glamour-shotBass fishing on the Ocklawaha River has been exceptional throughout December, thanks to the first spawning period of the season.

Although we are not catching big numbers of fish, the ones we are catching have been Trophies.

You might ask just how exceptional is the Bass fishing? On a recent trip, 12/15, we caught and released 8 Largemouths in less than 2 hours. Three 2 pounders, 2 threes, a 6, an 8, and a 10 pound Bass. That’s 36 lbs. of fish!

Two subsequent trips on the 19th and the 21st produced similar results, with the small fish of the day weighing 4 lbs.

The numbers speak for themselves. If you’re looking for that Trophy Largemouth for the wall, now is the time.

HO! HO! HO! See you on the River!

Luck with the Largemouths

Monday, December 14th, 2009 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

slick-charters-freshwater-glamour-shotOver the past few weeks, the Ocklawaha River has consistently produced several trophy sized Bass each trip.

Tuesday, December the 8th ,was no exception…

Mr Paul Burton, son Adam, and friend Mel,all from northern California, along with myself, headed down river from the Ocala Boat Basin to try our luck with the Largemouths…

They had never before fished for Bass with live bait ,”shiners”, but apparently were fast learners…

Paul and Mel hooked up a double on the first cast, and Adam wound up with the “fish of the day”, a fat 6 & 1/2 pounder…

The picture bellow is Paul with a nice 6 pound Bass he pulled out of the heavy cover.

Not bad for a half days fishing…

Also, like true sportsmen, they released every fish, unharmed…

Thanks guys for “making my day”…
