BEDDING BASS IN JULY!

Monday, July 19th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

Yes, that’s right, I said bedding Bass in July.

It doesn’t happen every year, but under the right conditions, Bass will bed during the summer months.

Recent rainfall has prompted officials to open the dam at Moss Bluff, and with the influx of water comes a new population of Largemouths. These fish, for the most part, have spent most of their lives swimming around in the temperate lake waters to our south. As they enter the Ocklawaha River near Ocala, they encounter the 72 degree water flowing out of the Silver River, which triggers them to spawn. Recently, we’ve caught several Bass in the”pre-spawn” mode, fat and aggressive.

The late afternoons have produced the best numbers, and as always live bait is the only way to go.

Speaking of live bait, Fat Daddy’s Bait and Tackle (out on Hwy. 40 at Forest Corners) has wild shiners for $10.00 a dozen. I would highly recommend picking up a couple dozen for your next trip.

Like I’ve always said “You either got a wild shiner, or you need one”.

‘Till next time, see you on the water…

Good Luck

Ocklawaha River Spring Time Bass

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

Bass fishing on the middle Ocklawaha River has been very slow over the past several weeks due mostly to the spawn. Also, we’ve had record amounts of rainfall over the past two months, which has had the River flowing out of her banks for some time now. So much for our “dry season”.

Initially this all sounds pretty grim, but in the past we’ve had great fishing after these high water periods.

Additionally, I expect the Bass to begin their “post-spawn” bite sometime this month. Spring is here, and I am looking forward to some great fishing.

Captain Nick Says Endeaver to Perservere

“Endeavor to Persevere”

slick-charters-freshwater-glamour-shotI’ve had several bass trips on the Ocklawaha River over the past couple of weeks, and fortunately we have been able to find the fish.

The water level between the dams at Moss Bluff (south of Ocala) and Rodman is very low, which means we now have to cover more territory to find the same numbers of fish than just a few months ago.

We’ve averaged about a dozen Bass per half day trip between 2 and 6 lbs. throughout October. Not great, but not bad considering.

We just missed our chance at getting some much needed rain from Hurricane Ida by about 100 miles, and now the dry season is on us. Oh well! Best thing I know to do about the weather is pray for it to improve.

FYI…several miles of the Ocklawaha River has been cleared. It is hard to say how long it will last, but presently the waters are fairly navigatable from Lake Griffin north to Gores Landing.

THE TIME IS NOW

THE TIME IS NOW

slick-charters-freshwater-glamour-shotJust about a year ago, I experienced one of those Bass fishing trips of a lifetime. Thanks to Tropical Storm Fay, the Dam that controls the Ocklawaha River water level had been opened to relieve flooded waterfront properties to our south, which in turn really freed up the Bass.

Well, we didn’t get a tropical storm… yet, but the accumulation of rainfall we’ve received of late has prompted officials to open up the floodgates and again send us some much needed water. There is no way of telling how much, or for how long, but right now the Bass fishing is excellent.

I’ve had several people inquire as to when and where the Bass fishing is best, and I told them to keep an eye on our web-site for “real time” updates. Well, the time is now, and the place is aboard the “Lucky Strike” with Capt. Nick.

Need More Water

MORE OR LESS

Just north of Ocala/Gainesville, several rivers have flooded while drought conditions south of us have left the Ocklawaha River low.

Unfortunately, when these conditions exist, it makes it tough for the fisherman, and even tougher for the fish.
Recently most of the Bass being caught have been found up as far north as the Rodman Reservoir.

Typically this time of year we have no trouble catching our limit of Largemouths just about anywhere you want to fish on the Ocklawaha River, but lowering water tables have forced us to adjust our prime fishing locations.

Hopefully the man upstairs will soon bless us with a little  more water here, and a little less to our north.
Capt. Nick
