FIRST SIGNS

Friday, August 13th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

Although fishing on the Ocklawaha River is pretty good year around, it’s much better during the cooler months of the year, especially if you are after that Trophy Bass.

Recently the signs of the seasons changing have began to be more apparent every day. Leaves turning… then falling all over the yard, less mowing of the grass, and my favorite of all, the start of pre-season football!

Another favorite of mine is that the size and numbers of fish start to increase this time of year. Some of the best Bass fishing we’ve ever experienced was in Sept. “08 after Tropical Storm Faye came through our area.

Lately we’ve caught good numbers of fish, but only a few “big-uns”. I’ve seen lots of Shad and Mullett in both the Silver and Ocklawaha River over the past few months which is good news for our first spawn.

The Stripers are running on Lake George. I had a recent report that good numbers of them we’re being caught at the Croker Hole and the mouths of both Salt Run and Juniper Springs.

Keep in mind the best time to catch Striped Bass is at night which is also the best time for a thunderstorm.

Until next time…see you on the River!

Good Luck

EARLY MORNING BITE BEATS THE HEAT

Monday, July 26th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters 1 Comment »

Over the last two weeks we’ve had several fishing trips and tours of the Ocklawaha and Silver Rivers. The Bass bite has been good although limited to a few hours each day, early morning and late afternoon.

Some of our most recent clients have taken advantage of our Two River Special and done very well. Typically we shove off by 7 a.m., fish for a couple of hours, then tour the Silver River until about noon. This is an ideal trip for those who want to have some fun without breaking a sweat.

Recently we’ve caught lots of fish, but only a few Largemouths over 4 lbs.. Plenty of Pike (Chain Pickerel) and Garfish to keep you busy between the Bass.

Pictured below is Alexis (11) showing off a couple of early morning Bass.

Until next time…see you on the River!

Good Luck

It’s Hot!

Like I said in the Saltwater report, three days this week we either tied or broke the all time record highs in Ocala.

Although the temps are soaring, the fish continue to bite both in the fresh and salt water.

Recently the Bass bite on the Ocklawaha River has been very good late in the day, and that’s just fine with me. No other place I’d rather be on those sweltering hot days.

Thankfully so far the oil spill in the Gulf has not effected the saltwater fishing in our region. We’re all saying our prayers that the “experts” will get it under control soon.

‘Till next time, see you on the water!

See you on the River!
Good Luck

To Beat The Heat

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

Typically, as summer approaches and water temperatures begin to rise, Bass fishing in general slows, at least in most locations. The exceptions to this rule, or I should say the remedy, is simply fish where the water temps remain constant year around, spring fed rivers.

These natural wonders are without a doubt the best locations to cure that “fishing Jones” when summertime temps soar. Additionally, there’s no shortage of these cool spots to fish throughout the state of Florida.

Here in Ocala I’ve been fortunate to live within just a couple of miles of the Ocklawaha River for many years now, and have yet to find a better location to target that Trophy Largemouth.

Although the winter or “pre-spawn” season is best, I’ve caught Bass in the 8-10 lb. range every month of the year. Additionally, it’s next to impossible to find a more comfortable location to fish on these sweltering summer day’s.

Recently we’ve caught the majority of our fish early in the morning, near or under submerged structures. Like always, with a wild shiner.

One sure fire way to figure out the bite during the summer is to try fishing very early in the a.m., then again late in the p.m.. More often than not, the bite will be much better during one time period or the other. The only way to know is to go!

See you on the River!
Good Luck

Time To Take Advantage Of Spawning Bass

Friday, March 12th, 2010 by Captain Nick with Slick Charters No Comments »

This years first pre-spawn bite that we have been taking advantage of has started tapering off. From early December of “09, until late February “10, we experience some of the best Bass fishing on the Ocklawaha River that I can recall.

Although the bite has recently slowed, we are still managing to get a few nice Bass each trip, with the occasional lunker (5 lbs. or better).

I expect for the next month or so we are going to see a few slow days, but I am looking forward to a great post-spawn bite.

Speaking of spawning Bass, if you want next years fishing to be as good as this years, release any bedding/spawning Bass unharmed. It’s only good sense not to harvest your crop before it reproduces.
